How can I tell if a font is free for use, even commercial

I'm starting to want to make icons, but I want to do it the right way. I have a question. How can I tell if a font is available for general use.

I don't even know if this is the ideal place to post this, but let's go.

For example. I'm using sans-serif, to make icons, I made one from facebook now, is it right to do this? In case How could I arrange a font public domain so that I can insert in my future icons. This sans-serif is of those liberation sans?

Does anyone have any tips so that I don't worry about it in the future when I go to make icons?

Stack Overflow in Portuguese has certain questions related to development, but that are not about programming itself, due to the fact that stacks in Portuguese are still very recent compared to stacks in general. In English, you can ask in Graphic Design . In it there is even a question similar to yours:

How do I know if my downloaded font is legal ("How do I know if I can legally use the font I downloaded")

And the answer is that every case is a case. You should search the individual license of each source. Unfortunately this is a job you should do for each different source you are going to use. But you might be able to find some curated list for the most commonly used fonts.

Each author publishes their sources under a different license. In general, those who use Creative Commons release them for non-commercial use without the need for payment, but for commercial use you may have to pay a license.

Now... Sans-serif is not a font, it is a feature that several fonts have in common. Sans-serif means "without serifs", which are a visual marking that makes it easy for some people to read.

Several fonts have Sans-serif in the name, to make it clear that they do not have serifs, but that alone does not define the name. Find out the name of your source and check how its authors make it available for free use or commercial.

Look friend you can access the Google font library. All of them are free and I believe that there were no future problems.
