How do I make an app icon on a transparent background?

I want to make an app icon on a transparent background. To do this, I drew a picture with an alpha channel in Photoshop. Saved it to a png file. Uploaded it to Android Studio. The icon appeared on the smartphone screen. But instead of transparency, the background is light gray. Can I make the icon background transparent and how?
