Modal popup window in Android

There is a task to make a pop-up window of a special design. I made a design, created a class for Popup Windows. Now you need this window to be modal, i.e. have a transparent background, behind which the Activity would be visible.

I can't find how to do this.

I tried to create a window with a parent layer, which, being stretched to the full screen, would perform the task of a modal background. the background property is set as a color with transparency. However, as a result, I have the transparent modal window failed. The background color was just lighter and nothing was visible behind it. what should I do?

<GridLayout
        android:id="@+id/tracker_control_modal"
        xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
        xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
        android:layout_width="match_parent"
        android:layout_height="match_parent"
        android:background="@color/master_blue_dark_transparent"
        android:columnCount="1"
        android:rowCount="1"
        >

    <LinearLayout
            android:id="@+id/tracker_control_root"
            android:layout_width="wrap_content"
            android:layout_height="wrap_content"
            android:orientation="vertical"
            android:background="@color/master_white"
            android:layout_column="0"
            android:layout_row="0"
            android:layout_gravity="center">

        <GridLayout
                style="@style/Style_TrackerControl_Item"
                android:id="@+id/tracker_control_item_preference">

            <Button
                    android:layout_width="match_parent"
                    android:layout_height="wrap_content"
                    android:text="close"
                    android:id="@+id/close_button"/>
        </GridLayout>

    </LinearLayout>

</GridLayout>

Use the alpha channel to make the elements transparent:

android:alpha="0.5" // - 50%
android:alpha="1" // - 100% (непрозрачный)

Or programmatically:

textView.getBackground().setAlpha(80);

If you want to change the alpha channel for a particular color, use this hex transparency table:

100% — FF

Look at the documentation on DialogFragment, this is what you need.

Here is a small tutorial: http://javatechig.com/android/android-dialog-fragment-example
