What is the difference between ECMA Script and JavaScript?

I hear the term ECMAScript a lot, ES5, ES6 , linked to the JavaScript language. There is similarity between these two Terms ?

Each browser implements javascript in a different way and the role of ecmascript and standardize those implementations, so you don't have to like in the old days write a code for some browsers and another code for internet explorer for example.
