Why can't I choose my primary domain in the Google Search Console?

I go to the "Site Settings" in the Google Search Console. I choose the main domain (site.com -without www) and click on "Save".

In response, I receive a message:

The procedure for assigning the primary domain involves checking your domain ownership rights http://www.site.com/. Confirm it domain ownership http://www.site.com/.

I don't understand how and where to confirm it? I didn't find it in the documentation nothing about that.
